DIRECTORS WANTED! PASSION REQUIRED!
DEADLINE EXTENDED THROUGH SEPTEMBER 29!
To All Director Candidates,
The Play Reading Committee (PRC) and Board of Directors would like to thank you for applying to direct our next production at Ark Valley Players, scheduled for March 7-10 2019, at the historic Burford Theatre in Arkansas City, Kansas. Our mission is to inspire, nurture, challenge, amaze, educate, and empower artists and audiences, in order to enrich the cultural life of Arkansas City and the South Central Kansas and Northern Oklahoma area. AVP provides area residents the opportunity to attend and participate in quality theatrical productions of a cross-section of the finest theatrical works available.
Directors interested in working with us are asked to submit no more than three straight plays for the PRC to consider (no musicals will be considered at this time.) You will be asked to submit an application, a mock budget for your show, and the script(s) for consideration. Links to documents here.
The deadline for submissions is September 29.
AVP DIRECTOR SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Ark Valley Players Play Reading Committee is currently accepting submissions for directors for our next production, to be produced March 7-10, 2019 at the Burford Theatre, Arkansas City. Submissions will be accepted through September 15.
Who May Submit?
Ark Valley Players is both a community theatre and a theatre community. Our directors, like all volunteers, are unpaid. Therefore, we expect those who direct for us to have demonstrated both a commitment to theatre and an understanding of how we operate.
Box office intake accounts for most of our revenue. Each show is a financial risk we take seriously. Just as important are our volunteers. As a director, you may have a brilliant vision and an amazing script but your “people skills” are going to determine whether or not our volunteers will come back and work with us again (and see our productions, as well).
If you are newer to directing, please be realistic. Think “smaller cast shows” with low tech and easy set. Shows that are big in scope (or complicated in intimacy…as many two-person shows are) are best saved for you when you are more experienced and know who to enlist in your major project.
What to Submit
You are invited to submit up to three plays you would like to direct. To give the Play Selection Committee and our Board of Directors the greatest flexibility possible–and yourself the greatest chance–please consider submitting plays of different styles, cast sizes, etc.
We will NOT be accepting submissions for a musical for the remainder of the 2018-2019 season.
Each prospective director must submit scripts at their own expense to the committee, or, if a script is available to the director through another theatre company, you may submit a script that has been checked out from another theatre company. Scripts will be returned after the selection process. PDF forms are also acceptable.
All submissions will be reviewed by the Play Reading Committee. The committee is appointed from the ranks of AVP members and chosen to represent a broad range of theatrical experience, interests and tastes. The recommendations of the PRC will be reviewed by the full Board of Directors and final selections will be made. The director/play selected will be notified by the BOD.
The committee will:
- Read the scripts
- Look closely at director qualifications, needs, and schedules
- Select several plays for submission to our Board of Directors.
In the process, committee members may contact you with questions or to set up an interview about your submission, previous directing projects, experience in theatre, your schedule or other issues. It is in your best interest to make sure you fill out the forms as completely as possible. This is your chance to sell your show…and yourself, as the director.
Choosing a Script
Consider our Audiences
An important question to keep in mind is when submitting a play to the PRC: “Is there an audience for this play?” By all means, submit that quirky play that you love, but consider submitting plays with a broad appeal as well. AVP survives on its box office.
Consider our Talent Pool
Actors come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, ages and hair color. The committee will strive to select a group of plays for the Board of Directors which offer roles for men and women, young and old, veteran and novice. Strive for balance of roles. If you submit a play with twenty male roles, you might consider submitting a play with twenty female roles as well. Think of the talent in the community and ask yourself, “Do we have the talent to do this production?” Sometimes the right play will draw people in. Again, the key is to offer the committee as many options as you can.
Submit Plays you Love
Sometimes, in an effort to submit “more choices” for the committee, directors will submit one play they love and then throw in two they’re not crazy about just to fill out the “three-play” guideline. What is true for auditioning for plays is doubly true for submitting to direct them…you wouldn’t put state that you were willing to take any role if it wasn’t true…don’t commit yourself to directing a play that doesn’t speak to you. If you are in the position of being “in love” with only one play, then be true to your vision and only submit that one play. But remember, the committee may not love it the way you do or it may not be a “fit” for AVP at this time.
AVP reserves the right to accept or reject any play, director, or application.
If you have any questions or need further information please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Someone from the Play Reading Committee will contact you as soon as possible.
Directors who have submitted a project of interest to Ark Valley Players will be contacted via e-mail on or about October 1 so that we might schedule an interview. While all completed submissions will be given the same consideration, Ark Valley Players reserves the right to choose projects and directors that the committee feels will fit with our mission and will benefit our audiences and the theatre.
