The Star-Spangled Girl is a comedy written by Neil Simon. Performances are May 19 and 20, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. in the historic, climate-controlled Burford Theatre, 118 South Summit Street, Arkansas City (KS). Dinner starts at 6:15 p.m.
Set in San Francisco in the 1960s, the play is a story of a love triangle mixed with politics. Andy and Norman are radical liberals struggling to make a living working on their magazine, Fallout, which is dedicated to fighting “the system” in America. Sophie, a former Olympic swimmer, is an all-American, Southern girl who moves into the apartment next door. Norman immediately falls in love with Sophie but his feelings are not reciprocated. Norman’s obsession with Sophie makes Andy hire her just to keep the magazine going. When Sophie falls in love with Andy, the magazine and the men’s friendship are threatened.
Friday night tickets are for “Show Only” both on the main level and in the balcony. Concession foods will be available for separate purchase at the Friday night performance. Patrons interested in including dinner in their Saturday night show plans will enjoy a meal with their show ticket for $30 each. “Show Only” tickets are available for balcony seating at just $15 each. Miranda Nation Hofmeister is delighted to be a part of Ark Valley Players production of The Star-Spangled Girl! You may recognize her from recent performances in AVP’s ‘Tis the Season, as Essie in Marquee’s staged reading of You Can’t Take It With You, or as Mrs. Wormwood in Matilda at Southwestern College. Miranda is passionate about creating and supporting artistic experiences in the Midwest, with a particular affinity for theatrical pursuits, and is proud to serve as Executive Director at the historic Burford Theatre. |

James Bogner is an Arkansas City native making his debut theatrical performance in Star Spangled Girl this evening. He attended both ACHS and Cowley College. Enjoying his association with the Ark City Rec League, James has coached baseball and soccer for the past 15 years. As owner and operator of Done Right Plumbing, his Ark City based business, James and his wife, Darci, have three children. Darci would tell us that James’ hobbies are work and his softball team, but he will add camping and thoroughly enjoying his kids’ activities. James: “I am honored to have been cast in SSG; I hope our audiences enjoy watching it as much as we have had preparing it for them.” Welcome to the Burford stage, James! |

John Moberly is thrilled to be making his debut at the Burford Theater. John is a Southwestern College freshman working on his teaching degree for secondary education in English literature. You can find him on the stage, or practically anywhere, singing when he’s not in class. You might recognize him as Franz in Southwestern College’s production Sunday in the Park with George, Bobby (Winfield: A Bluegrass Musical), or Spongebob Squarepants (The Spongebob Sqaurepants Musical) to name a few. John would like to thank his family and friends for the support he has gotten throughout the years and would like to thank Dijon for the opportunity. He hopes you enjoy The Star-Spangled Girl. |
